Manuel Aires Mateus

Manuel Aires Mateus graduated from the Architecture College in 1986. He collaborates with Francisco Aires Mateus since 1988, the year in which they founded in Lisbon the AIRES MATEUS Studio. His projects, ranging from single-family homes to urban infrastructures, including public buildings and ephemeral installations, are part of the international debate on contemporary architecture and have been developed in many countries.

Over time, he has received several national and international awards, being the most relevant the Valmor Prize, the Secil Prize, the FAD Prizes, the Ecola Prize, the ENOR Prize, the Iberoamerican Architecture Biennial prizes and several selections for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. In 2017 he also received the Pessoa Prize.

Several of his projects have been published in monographs, such as El Croquis, Arquitetura Viva, GA, A + U, 2G, C3, d’Arco, A.MAG, TC Cuadernos, among others.

The atelier’s work focuses on the role of memory and knowledge, on the relationship between a physical and a cultural world. As well as in the search and reflection on all the scales that involve us, evoking the desire to draw. It seeks the continuity of forms and materiality, the continuity of time.
