Maria Emília Araújo

Maria Emília Araújo could have dedicated her life to any other art form. However, it was in ceramics that she found her great passion.

Renowned ceramist and contemporary painter, she specialised in large hand-painted murals. Her vibrant work is influenced by the rich culture of Portugal, and by the many places where she has lived: Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Curaçao and Caracas.

Since the 1960s, her primary form of artistic expression has been panels and paintings in tiles, which earned her the respect of a demanding public, eager for contemporary art of exceptional quality. In the last four decades, her unique creations were made at Viúva Lamego, where she is a resident artist.
