“Tavira” tile collection showcased in Paris

Designed by Bela Silva for Portuguese azulejo brand Viúva Lamego, the collection is inspired by the coastal town’s traditional colours.

Century-old azulejo brand Viúva Lamego will yet again represent Portuguese design and tradition at Maison & Objet in Paris this weekend. Starting tomorrow and lasting through to Sunday, the bi-annual fair is one of Europe’s biggest interior design events.

This year, the Portuguese brand chose to participate with the theme “Colour”, portrayed in several collections of diverse inspirations, including artist Bela Silva’s “Tavira” designs.

The small town on the eastern Algarve coast inspired Bela Silva, who spent long periods of her childhood summers in Tavira. “Memories of happy times unfold in a collection with a nod to the region’s architecture. On a white background, vivid colours multiply, with summer associations, such as yellow, green and even sea blue”.

The “Tavira” collection consists of four designs that form four distinct patterns. Measuring 17 cm by 17 cm, the tiles have an uneven finish, both in surface and shape. The artist uses manual painting techniques to imprint a character of uniqueness on each tile.

The artists also designed a panel of hand-painted tiles – named “A Mexican bird that travels in time from Mexico to India”. Its inspiration transcends borders and travels to India and Mexico. The two distant geographies find a common denominator in the exuberance of their colours,” reveals the brand. The panel will be unveiled at the highly anticipated Maison & Objet fair this weekend.
